Contemporary garden

This project was situated in Acton W3 and was designed by Chelsea award winner, Ann-Marie Powell.

Overview

Another fabulous design by Ann-Marie; the hardwood decking and seating combine perfectly with en-masse planting to create a geometric contemporary garden'

Client

Our client, Simon, wanted a slick new space for his young family and friends to enjoy. The existing garden was all concrete and overgrown lawn. His main requirements for the space were somewhere for friends to sit and chat, a new lawn for his daughter to play on, and generally being able to enjoy summer evenings in the sun. Work commitments kept Simon away from home for long periods, so it was important that the garden required little in the way of regular maintenance.

Specifications

Anne-Marie’s design interpreted the brief perfectly. Existing fruit trees were  saved and acted as good reference points within the overall scheme. The main structure of the garden included Balau hardwood decking, Balau raised seating (including a secret storage compartment), modern stepping stones and a lush new natural lawn.

In terms of planting, a limited palette was used.  By carefully selecting just a few different varieties, then planting these en masse, a striking contemporary look can be achieved. Tall purple-headed Verbenas sway in the breeze and are complemented well with Miscanthus grasses. Climbing plants such as Jasmin and Trachelospermum stand out well in front of the black fence to complete this urban hideaway.

Client comment

I just wanted to drop you a line to thank you for completing a wonderful job on our garden. We have been very impressed by the work completed and by your attention to detail. It has been a pleasure to have been dealt with in such a professional manner and has given us back hope after having had some dubious work carried out on the house!
