Family garden

This project is situated in Teddington, Surrey.

Overview

By adding a strong structure and selective planting, this space was re-vamped to provide privacy and seclusion in an overlooked mansion house garden – our client’s love of entertaining was endulged with seating and BBQ area.

Client

Our professional clients, Richard & Belle, lived in the garden flat of a grand mansion building in Teddington, Surrey. The garden area had become tired and needed a re-vamp. The couple loved cooking for friends and family, so an area to sit and relax was a key requirement. The existing garden also lacked privacy as it was overlooked by neighbouring flats. The impending arrival of their first child meant that gardening time would become scarce, so as is increasingly common nowadays, the design had to require little maintenance.

Specification

Spruce & Bloom’s solution was to add a strong structural element to the space – keeping in mind the need for some privacy. The curved shrub bed directly addressed  this. By planting tall bamboo, some privacy was afforded to the seating area, and in effect enclosed the space without becoming a barrier.

Reclaimed brick edging to the new lawn and flower beds nods to the historic setting of the garden. Planting took the form of box hedging, standard olive trees, French lavender and Phormium Pink Panther for it’s striking shape and colour. Completed in less than a week, this is a good example of how some projects need not cost the earth, but at the same time a dramatic transformation can be acheived.
