| Terrace garden |

This project is located in Richmond TW9. Overview ‘A difficult sloping site, now a multi-level terraced garden in which our client can entertain.’ Andrew, Spruce & Bloom
Client Helen’s garden was approached by a steep set of stairs from the house. One of three gardens in the space, there were no boundaries in place; just an overgrown grassy slope. She had never been able to enjoy this larger than average garden, and so approached us to come up with a solution. Due to the aspect, the upper part gathered in full-day sun, and making the most of the sun-bathing potential was a must. The garden was a reasonable walk from the house and so once inside, Helen was keen to stay there; therefore good storage was also a necessity. Helen had a moderate interest in gardening and so didn’t want planting that required too much looking after.
Specification Our solution was to divide the space in to distinct areas. Firstly a new fence was erected to enclose the space and provide privacy. The upper area would become a two-tiered softwood deck; for a table and chairs, and Mexican hammock. The lower area would combine a storage shed, and utility area. To access the lower garden, a gravel pathway was created and set at 45 degrees to let the eye flow through the space, and to take out the change in gradient. Softwood sleepers were used throughout the build for steps and to create retaining walls. Once the structure was complete, mixed planting was introduced. This took the form of formal box hedging, lavender and standard bay trees, combined with informal perennials and herbs.
Client comment ‘I love my new garden. Many thanks to Andrew and everyone at Spruce & Bloom for doing a great job.’ Helen |
